Our first visit was to the Kasuga Taisha Shrine, which was at the back of the Deer Park. So called as it is full of deer, and very mangy looking deer at that.
The route to the Shrine is bordered by hundreds of lanterns, these are lit at certain times of the year during festivals. I wouldn't want to be the person having to light them all, especially on a windy day as the front of each lantern has a rice paper shade ( i am sure that doesn't comply with fire regulations!).
It seems Alison is not the only person sporting a red raincoat, this Buddha, which is supposed to be a healing Buddha, obviously doesn't like getting wet either!
This is Todaji Temple, it is another World Heritage Site and is the largest wooden structure in the world and dated back for a good few centruries - for obvious resaons the most prominent signs all around it are "No Smoking".
These columns along the side of the Todaji Temple were supporting colums for part of the structure - i think the orange paint seller was giving a discount the day they painted these.
